The author, A. E. Cherbuliez, was a lecturer at Zürich University and prolific writer of musical biographies, most notably of J. S. Bach. As in his biography of Bach, he deliberately merges the life and the work of the composer. There is a valuable synopsis of all the plots of Händels operas, the major oratorios are treated in detail as is his orchestral work.

It is interesting to read a biography of Händel from German scholarship. Cherbuliez often quotes German sources and asserts Händels closeness to the German cultural soul. Therefore this biography is to be recommended for the treatment of Händels early years. Whereas for Händels years in England, the country of his adoption, it is well advised to read English Handelian literature.
