Situated in central Australia, Outback Creek Primary School is so remote there are no suitable teachers to fill the grade six vacancy. As a temporary solution the school is forced to hire anyone with a teaching qualification, even if they are crazy! The second book in the Crazy Relief Teachers series sees the legal-eagle, Ms Law, take control of the class. With pin-striped slacks, a leather briefcase and hair pulled so tight her face is in danger of being yanked to the top of her head, she instantly turns the classroom into a courtroom and sets about planning a trial to determine Pete’s guilt on a charge of window-breakage.Pete is represented in the court room battle by his best mate, Steele Buckle, who also narrates the story.

Complicating matters is the Outback Creek Corn-fest. Pete is determined to win the Corn-test, an award that recognises the student that displays the most community spirit, outstanding behaviour and an in-depth knowledge of corn. However, a classroom conviction will mean certain defeat.

Competing against Pete in the Corn-test and court room is Brittany Baxter. She’s taken out the corn-test every year since prep and volunteers for the prosecution role to ensure she denies Pete the award once again.Pete’s initial defence, ‘It takes one to no one,’ fails quickly. The situation worsens when Brittany paints Pete as a reckless person, recalling the time he invented his own swimming stroke and finished a swimming race in the crowd.

As Pete considers a plea deal from Brittany, involving him withdrawing from the Corn-test and serving three detentions (no hard labour cleaning dusters), things finally turn his way. While filming a documentary on the devastating natural disaster, the cornado, Pete discovers the ball he belted for six lodged in a fork of a cypress tree.

He’s innocent! It takes forensic evidence, an expert witness and a scientific explanation of why popcorn pops to convince Ms Law that a tin of exploding tennis balls was the window-breaking culprit. Further investigation by Steele reveals the plot of Brittany, and the bone-head bullies Weasel and Radley, to frame Pete. Steele sets about making sure they face a trial of their own.
